Before your first appointment, we will have exchanged emails or perhaps spoken on the phone. I will have sent over an email with instructions on how to find me (if we're meeting in person) or a Teams invitation. I will have included my counselling agreement that outlines the terms of our partnership and payment details.
If we are meeting in person you will come to my room at the top of Otterhampton Village Hall in Combwich. There is plenty of free parking near the hall. My room is on the second floor and I will have signs up to follow. There are toilets and the second floor is also accessible by chairlift.
If we are meeting online, I recommend finding somewhere comfortable to sit where you won't be overheard. You may also prefer to sit somewhere different to where you work as this can help you to have space between your session and going back to your day-to-day life. It's a good idea to have a drink and tissues to hand, if you've come to see me, I will have this next to your chair.
It's natural to feel nervous or anxious when we first meet, I will do my best to put you at ease. I will briefly outline what will happen and I will ask you if you have any questions about the agreement.
I may ask if you have had any counselling before and what you found helpful or what wasn't so helpful. Then I will ask your reasons for coming to counselling and what you hope to gain. I will invite you to ask me any questions (and you can ask me questions at any time in our counselling relationship). During this session I may ask about your friendships, or your relationship if you have a partner, your work and your family. Just so I can get an idea of what support you have around you. Ultimately this is your therapy session and you can choose what you share with me.
I will keep an eye on the time and let you know when the end is approaching. At the end of the session, we will schedule the next session. Most clients find weekly counselling beneficial and usually book at the same time each week, however, I understand that shift patterns or finances may make this difficult and a more flexible approach might be needed.
If you would like to book a session please contact me.
