Nervous about your first counselling session?

Here’s what to expect from a first session with me.

Before We Meet

Ahead of your first session, we will have exchanged emails or perhaps spoken on the phone. I will send you an email with all the details you need, including directions if we are meeting in person or a Google Meet invitation for an online session.

You will also receive a copy of my counselling agreement, which outlines the terms of our work together, including payment details.

If We Are Meeting in Person

For in-person sessions, you’ll find me in my counselling room at the top of Otterhampton Village Hall in Combwich. There is plenty of free parking nearby.

My room is on the second floor, with clear signage to guide you.

If We Are Meeting Online

For online sessions, I recommend finding a quiet, comfortable space where you won’t be overheard. If possible, choose a different location from where you work, this can help create a clear boundary between your session and the rest of your day. You might also like to have a drink and some tissues nearby.

Feeling Nervous? That’s Completely Normal

It’s natural to feel a little nervous before your first session, and I will do my best to help you feel at ease. At the start of our session, I will briefly outline what to expect and answer any questions you may have about the counselling agreement.

Your First Session: Understanding Your Needs

I may ask whether you’ve had counselling before and what you found helpful or unhelpful in past experiences. We’ll also explore your reasons for seeking counselling and what you hope to gain from our sessions.

During our conversation, I may ask about different aspects of your life; such as your relationships, friendships, work, and family. This is so I can better understand the support system around you. However, this is your time, and you are always in control of what you choose to share.

You are also welcome to ask me questions at any time throughout our work together.

Ending the Session and Next Steps

As our time together draws to a close, I will let you know when we are approaching the end of the session. We can then discuss your next appointment. There’s no pressure, you may find you want to go away and think about it before you book another session.

Many clients find weekly counselling beneficial, often booking at the same time each week. However, I understand that shift patterns or financial considerations may mean a more flexible approach is needed, and I am happy to accommodate this where possible.

Ready to Take the Next Step?

If you would like to book a session or have any questions, please feel free to get in touch. I look forward to meeting you.
